Nutrition, as with many things in our lives, tends to get sensationalized by the media and other outlets. We hear these nutritional buzzwords like superfoods, gluten-free, low-fat, low carb, antioxidant, and many others. Sorting out what each of them mean and how it should (or shouldn’t) change your daily life or dietary habits is a very difficult thing to do. The good news is that the category of superfood is a relatively easy “buzzword to explain”.
Superfood can be defined as any food that is exceptionally nutrient dense in relationship to caloric content. It may almost be easier to explain what a superfood ISN’T since there is some disagreement for what actually constitutes a defined superfood. A superfood is not cake, white bread, soda, twinkies, fried chicken or a double decker bacon chili cheese smothered hot dog. But of course you knew that, since those all constitute junk food. A super food will fuel your body and will promote wellness and health.
Some superfoods include:
- Greens (spinach, kale, chard, mustard greens, etc)
- Broccoli
- Blueberries
- Chia seeds
- Flax Seeds
- Red Wine (yes, you read that right)
- Cocoa (not Hershey’s chocolate, dark, rich chocolate is what you are looking for)
- Bell Peppers
- Eggs
- Salmon
- Nuts
- Avocado
- Coconut Oil
- Coffee
